Helsinki University Shorinji Kempo Branch
Shorinji Kempo is a japanese martial art. It was founded in 1947 by Doshin So, who's also called Kaiso. Based on the techniques he learned in China, Kaiso created a new martial art he called Shorinji Kempo. The name is a reference to the temple of Shaolin, the source of many martial arts, and also the place where Kaiso studied. Shorinji is the japanese form of the word Shaolin. The word Kempo is based on the Japanese word ken, referencing martial prowess.

Helsinki University Shorinji Kempo Branch is an association meant for the students and staff of Helsinki University. The branch is a part of Unisport-activity and therefore the practice sessions are only open for the students and staff of Helsinki University and Aalto University. We are a member of the Finnish Shorinji Kempo Federation and the World Shorinji Kempo Organization.
Unisport's sports fee is not required to participate.
We practice all aspects of Shorinji Kempo with multiple training methods (basic and pair techniques, sparring, massage and first aid skills and Shorinji Kempo's philosophy). In addition, we do physical exercise in our training sessions. We train mostly in pairs and we utilize protective gear and physical training equipment as much as possible. Our aim is to practice self-defense as realistically as possible without compromizing safety. We take care of our training partner, because we could not train without him or her. Atmosphere in our training is always warm and you can easily become a member of our group.
